Academic brilliance, community pride take centre stage on Nyishi Day

Itanagar: Nyishi Elite Society (NES) president Prof Tana Showren on Saturday called upon the community to preserve its cultural heritage and continue striving for academic and professional excellence, as the NES celebrated the 18th Nyishi Day with a grand function in the capital.

Speaking at the event held at the NES Research and Heritage Centre in Richi Jullang, Prof Showren lauded the outstanding academic achievements of Nyishi students—especially the girls—and expressed hope that professional achievers would remain rooted in community values and ethical service.

He made a fervent appeal for the conservation of the region’s biodiversity, encouraged the use of the Nyishi mother tongue at home, and urged citizens to adopt traditional attire as a means to promote indigenous handlooms and local entrepreneurship.

Marking a significant milestone, April 19 was earlier declared a gazetted holiday by the state government to honour “Nyishi Day,” in recognition of the cultural identity and contributions of Arunachal Pradesh’s largest indigenous community.

As part of the celebration, the NES conferred its 20th Annual Academic Excellence Awards and Professional Achievers-2024 honours on 21 meritorious students and 29 officers—including 19 in absentia—for their commendable achievements in academics and public service.

Among the Class X toppers were Gyamar Atte (95%), Kipa Mingpung and Khyoda Rinium (93.60% each), and Heri Dol and Tarh Laaz (93.4% each). In Class XII (Humanities), Gungming Phassang and Oshin Likha (93.60% each), Someen Kocho (92.40%) and Giogi Tajon (91.80%) were recognised.

Commerce stream achievers included Indira Dolo (89.2%), Heri Pada (88.8%), and Dphu Melo (73.6%), while Science stream toppers included Teji Pobo (95%), Nipen Sonam Rapung (91%) and Nido Rilen.

The NES also felicitated six students who cleared national-level entrance examinations. Chukhu Tomu, Chukhu Teki, and Siva Taba Loma cracked the JEE (Advanced 2024), while Mangnam Taku, Nikja Apanilo, and Yaran Karsing qualified NEET-2024 for medical admissions.

The event was attended by several dignitaries including Rajya Sabha MP Nabam Rebia, Itanagar Mayor Tame Phassang, APPSC Chairman Prof Pradip Lingfa and community elders.
