Itanagar: Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Friday announced that a new international-standard stadium with a seating capacity of 25,000 will soon be constructed in the state capital, adding a major boost to Arunachal Pradesh’s sporting infrastructure.
“We have already identified the site, and construction will commence soon,” Khandu declared at the glittering opening ceremony of the 4th Arunachal State Games 2025 held at the Golden Jubilee Stadium here.
Addressing a packed stadium of athletes and spectators, Khandu reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to providing world-class facilities and opportunities for sportspersons across Arunachal Pradesh.
“Our athletes have made us proud with their performances at national events. It’s our duty to ensure they get the best support to aim even higher,” he said.
Highlighting the state’s recent sporting successes, Khandu noted that Arunachal Pradesh ranked second among northeastern states at the recently concluded 38th National Games, clinching 13 medals. “We now aim for a top 10 finish at the upcoming 39th National Games in Meghalaya,” he added.
The chief minister said the government, under its ‘Mission Olympics’ initiative, is facilitating advanced training for athletes at premier centres across India and is ready to send them abroad if necessary.
“No talent should remain untapped for want of infrastructure or opportunity,” he stressed.
He also announced the construction of new stadiums in Lower Dibang Valley, Lower Siang, Pakke Kessang and Longding districts, and credited recent milestones like the hosting of the 77th Santosh Trophy final in Yupia as signs of the state’s growing sporting stature.
“Next month, we are set to host the South Asian Football Federation U-19 Championship — a dream that’s now becoming reality,” he said.
Khandu lauded the dedication of athletes, which, he said, has transformed Arunachal Pradesh into an emerging sports powerhouse. He encouraged them to compete with confidence and aim for international glory.
Sports and Youth Affairs minister Kento Jini, in his address, said the state is witnessing steady progress in sports infrastructure and training facilities.
“Several new projects are in the pipeline to provide modern amenities and conducive environments for athletes to train and excel,” he said.
Adding star power to the event, Olympic bronze medallist and world boxing champion Lovlina Borgohain graced the occasion as the guest of honour.
In an inspiring message to young athletes, she said, “Perseverance and dedication are key. Never give up on your dreams.”
The opening ceremony was also attended advisor to sports minister Zignu Namchoom, Itanagar MLA Techi Kaso, IMC Mayor Tame Phassang, BJP state president Kaling Moyong and Arunachal Olympic Association (AOA) president Taba Tedir and secretary general Bamang Tago.
