Itanagar: The Capital Police on Monday apprehended a suspected drug supplier from the Civil Secretariat premises and seized a substantial quantity of suspected heroin, officials said.
Based on a tip-off received around 2.40 pm from a staffer of the Civil Secretariat, police rushed to the third floor of Block No. 3 where alert security personnel had reportedly confined a suspected drug peddler inside a bathroom, a police statement said.
The accused, identified as Vicky Chetry (32), son of Vijoy Chetry and a resident of Zero Point near Gumpa Mandir, Itanagar, was caught with narcotics and drug paraphernalia. His permanent address is in Borgolai Milan Nagar, under Margherita police station in Assam’s Tinsukia district. He is currently employed as a Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS) in the state’s Horticulture Department.
A police team led by SDPO Kengo Dirchi, along with Inspector Khiksi Yangfo, SI Kenter Tacha and the PS ready party, acted swiftly on the input under the supervision of SP Itanagar Rohit Rajbir Singh.
The search, conducted in the presence of First Class Magistrate (NDPS) Oli Koyu, Deputy Secretary (GAD) Bapir Megu and Under Secretary (SA) Punyo Obing, led to the recovery of eight plastic vials and one tobacco container containing suspected heroin, four used syringes and ₹32,760 in cash.
Following questioning, Chetry disclosed that more contraband was hidden behind the bathroom window. The subsequent search yielded 18 more plastic vials of suspected heroin and three scissors allegedly used in narcotics handling.
In total, police seized 26 vials weighing 36.82 grams and one tobacco container weighing 7.54 grams, taking the total suspected heroin seizure to 44.36 grams, inclusive of packaging.
All legal procedures including search, seizure, weighing, packing and sealing were carried out in accordance with the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, the statement said.
A case has been registered and further investigation is underway.
Police lauded the Secretariat staff for their alertness, stating that the swift operation reflects the force’s resolve to dismantle drug supply networks even within high-security government zones.
The entire operation was carried out under Operation Dawn 2.0.
